Don't rush to throw away empty egg cartons. There are three ways to use them that will be useful to gardeners and summer residents.
We plant seedlings
Egg cartons are excellent containers for planting seedlings. It is better not to use the entire tray, but to cut it in such a way that you get containers with three or two rows of cells. Planting too close will cause the plants to fight for light, stretch out and weaken. For better growth of horticultural crops, create a container with a double bottom: make small drainage holes in the compartments of one cassette and insert it into the other. This solution will rid the sprouts of excess moisture.
Carefully fill the compartments of the prepared container with fertile soil, and then plant 2-3 seeds in each with a toothpick. Place the future crop in a sunny, dry and warm place before sprouting.
When the sprouts appear, do not pull them out of the ground, just dig in the box in the garden. The cardboard will first protect the plants from weeds, and then gradually rot. Watering such beds is necessary less often, because the container retains moisture well.
Summer residents are advised to plant carrots, radishes, onions, beets, lettuce in paper containers.
Also, containers are useful as a stand for seedlings, which are grown in eggshell pots. They provide stability and ease of transport. In the spring, sprouts in natural pots are planted on a plot, and the container is sent to compost.
Making the beds
To make planting carrots, radishes and beets easy and quick, use the cassettes as a stencil. On prepared beds, press the cells into the black soil with equal force and get neat and even planting holes. Plant seeds in them, sprinkle evenly with soil and level the plot.
When planting horticultural crops, use the following principle:
- radish - in 2 rows, 1 seed in 1 compartment;
- carrots - in 2 rows, 1-2 seeds in 1 compartment;
- beets - staggered, 1-2 seeds in 1 compartment.
Carrot and radish seeds can also be planted in paper baskets, after making holes in the cells and filling them with earth, and then digging the cardboard into the loosened soil.
We make paths between the beds
It is easy to make convenient paths from boxes of 30 eggs that will help to keep order in the plot. Lay out homemade paths in the aisles, and at the end of the season, collect them and bury them in the ground. The cardboard will rot, so additional cleaning of the garden is not required.

Using diapers in the garden
Even the most prominent world strategists can envy the imagination and resourcefulness of Russian summer residents. It would seem that diapers and a vegetable garden are incompatible things, but no - how! You still have unused stocks of this good, do not know where to put it? Feel free to use it!
Similarly, you can sow carrots. The difference is that the seeds of this culture are small, several pieces are placed in each cell. After the sprouts get stronger, the largest and strongest seedling is left in each hole.
Frequent thinning has a negative effect on the presentation of the carrots, and thanks to the trays, the necessary distance between the roots is ensured from the very beginning.
There is no need for weeding and frequent watering.
You can plant carrots and radishes across a row, the garden will look neat. The radishes will ripen earlier and there will be enough room for the carrots to grow.
Planting carrots together
Many summer residents and gardeners practice joint (mixed) planting of carrots on a plot with other crops. It is favorable to plant a crop next to onion sets, leeks, radishes, peas, parsley, lettuce.
The best neighborhood when planting together is onions and carrots, since the first culture scares off the carrot fly, and the second one repels the onion fly. Thus, mutually beneficial cooperation and perfect compatibility are obtained. For example, you can plant a bow around the perimeter of a garden bed, or alternate rows.
At the same time, the planting scheme should not be too dense, it is necessary to observe the distance, because the carrots need to be watered more often, and the onion development proceeds faster and more intensively.
By the way! An excellent neighborhood for a vegetable crop with marigolds. Flowers are insecticidal and also repel pests. Moreover, they simply decorate the territory.
How to care for greens in cardboard packaging on the windowsill?
Taking care of the onions in the pallet is not difficult. Even children can cope with it. It is important to monitor the water level in the trays - it should not touch the bulbs, and the growing roots should always be submerged. To prevent the water from blooming, you can dilute several activated carbon tablets in it - 1-2 in a small pan or 5-6 in a large one.
The water in the sump is changed regularly - at least once a week.
In winter, it is important to maintain the light level of the bulbs. In September and October, natural daylight will be sufficient, but by the end of October, the days are getting shorter, and the bow needs additional lighting. To provide it, an ordinary table lamp will suffice. Just make sure that the growing green feather does not touch the hot light bulb.
Cardboard pallets can quickly get wet, but this is both their plus and minus - less water is required, and less often you have to change it, but you have to replace the lower tiers of the pallets more often. In this regard, plastic containers are more durable and can be used several times.
The feather is cut off as soon as it reaches 15-20 cm in size. Usually a small bulb is enough for 3-4 harvests of greenery. Larger ones will be enough for 5-6 times.
One standard container for ten cells is enough to provide a family with fresh herbs. Larger cardboard hydroponics require space and extra effort to control the cardboard being soaked and replace the bottom tiers on time. However, a large scale is enough for a large family, and some of them start up such grown onions for sale.
Forcing onions for herbs at home is one of the most popular ways to get organic produce. Simple techniques and simple devices for growing without land on the windowsill will give a quick and good harvest.
