THE AGRONOMIST ANSWERS ON HOW TO GROW AND CARE FOR PLANTS
QUESTION ABOUT SPATHIPHYLLUM
ABOUT MY SPATHIPHYLLUM
QUESTION FROM FRANCIS
I would like to ask you some questions about a spatifillo that they gave me.
I state that I am a neophyte on the subject and I take advantage of your very useful tips to enrich my knowledge.
- they are placed in the house;
- the type of exposure: half-light (corner of the room on the side of the window; and the mezzanine under the stairs in front of the window);
- one has been in my possession for 3 months and the other for a month;
- both in excellent condition;
- the frequency of watering is about 10 days;
- they are fertilized with a fortnightly frequency with liquid fertilizer (specific for that type of plant);
- I have not carried out any anti-parasite treatment.
I would like to know, noting that the vases are a little small, in what period is it possible to transfer them? The "flower", once dried, has been cut from the base. Does this cause damage to the plant? When is the next flowering? Other tips to "grow" them better.
While waiting, I congratulate you on the site and cordially greet you.
sorry for the delay in replying but in this period the correspondence to be processed was really great.
We come to us, spathiphyllus, beautiful plant.
Normally the spatifillo is repotted in spring using a vase a little larger than the previous one and a good compote made of peat to which it is advisable to add a little sand (not sea!). At the bottom of the vase I suggest you put some pieces of earthenware or expanded clay to help drain the water.
The dead leaves as well as the spathe when they begin to darken must be cut at the base. Therefore you have done very well to cut them as soon as they dry (remember, every dead thing is subject to attacks by numerous parasites so it is advisable to eliminate them as soon as possible).
The next flowering will take place in late spring-summer. But be generous with fertilizing. Around March, start fertilizing the plant every 3 weeks to get to May where you will start fertilizing it once every 10 days until September. Good fertilization ensures good flowering.
Use a liquid fertilizer (which you will give to the plant with the watering water) composed not only of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium but also of magnesium, iron, boron. When you go to buy a fertilizer, be careful to read carefully what is written in the package.
Regarding some precautions to be taken for the spatifillo I suggest you read the answer given to Silvia in the address bookAgronomist answers.
I hope I have been thorough. If there are any doubts, you know where to find me.
