Gone are the days when the most diverse carrots grew from seeds taken from the same bag: long and short, thin and thick, with a rounded tip and a sharp one. True, I must admit that she was all very sweet. Now we are offered such selected seeds that you can grow perfectly even beautiful root crops with a delightfully thin tail on a round tip. However, for this you need to try, because if she doesn’t like something, she tries to bend, and if you don’t overlook, then freaks can grow up altogether.
Carrot oriental beauty reviews
My choice is JUICE AND SWEET carrots. And this is according to many years of testing - Nantes, Touchon, Queen of Autumn. The first two varieties are in fact also very beautiful - an elongated, flat and smooth carrot with a rounded tip, the color is bright orange. And it seems to me that it shines, as it were, translucent. In general, I am happy with them and try to plant them.
For a change, I also add Chantonnay, Losinoostrovskaya, Vitamin, etc.
All sorts of perversions, such as Thumb Boy, Sugar Thumb, Sweetie and others that grow up as small round freaks, I do not like, do not live up to expectations.
Carotel paris - the earliest and baby carrots. One of the oldest varieties. Short, almost rounded, orange fruits of excellent dessert taste - tender and sweet. Children love her very much. The yield is small. Grows well on heavy soils, loams. I'm planting a third year for a child, she is interested in eating this!
still planted BEAUTY maid Belongs to the "Chantenay" cultivar. Medium early variety (105-115 days from germination to technical ripeness). Root crops are bright orange, conical, blunt-pointed, of medium length (14-16 centimeters), 4-5 centimeters in diameter, weighing 90-140 grams. The pulp is of excellent taste, very sweet and juicy. The variety is resistant to flowering.

this year, on the advice of Frans Hasanovich, I will plant Chantan and Nantes.

The variety is plastic, capable of forming a crop in unfavorable weather conditions and with poor watering. Root crops are able to lie until the next harvest without loss of taste and marketability.
Seeds are sown per pound to a depth of 1-1.5 cm in early spring and before winter, with 25 cm row spacing and 3-4 cm row spacing.
Prefers well-cultivated light soils, requires timely thinning in the initial period of growth and 2-3-fold inter-row loosening during the growing season, ensuring sufficient watering.
There are a lot of varieties and hybrids of carrots, so first, let's decide for what purposes carrots are grown on your site. If for sale, then of course the most important parameters will be the commercial qualities of carrots, and these are appearance, keeping quality and transportability. In this case, it is necessary to sow varieties and hybrids of foreign selection, since they are bred taking into account, first of all, the appearance of carrots - even in length and diameter, smooth roots. But their taste and useful qualities are lower than domestic varieties.
Russian varieties and hybrids of carrots, of course, are not so beautiful and even, but in terms of yield they are in no way inferior to foreign ones, and in taste, carotene content in them, and often in keeping quality, they are significantly superior.
According to the ripening period, all carrot varieties can be conditionally divided into three groups. In early ripening varieties, 85-100 days pass from germination to harvesting of root crops, in mid-ripening varieties - from 105 to 120 days, and in late-ripening varieties - 125 days or more. Which variety you need, you will choose over time yourself.
This collection is based on gardeners' reviews of the best varieties of carrots at the end of 2018.

Cooking a bed for carrots
Once I read how one gardener has been preparing beds for carrots since autumn.
He marks a bed, and then with a shovel handle makes recesses in the ground and fills the holes with grass residues. It turns out a "warm bed", separate for each carrot. And in the spring, adding humus, he puts one seed in each hole.
The author argued that this method is very convenient: there is no need to thin out, saving seeds and a good harvest - carrots reach 30-40 cm in length. And I thought: if there is one bed, then of course, but if 6-8, like mine, how much time and effort it will take to prepare a separate hole for each carrot seed! And I went my own way!
In early spring, she planted a phacelia (siderat) on a carrot bed and began to go about her business: she dug, planted, weeded, watered, and the phacelia grew and grew. At the end of May, when it grew 25-30 cm, I dug it up with a coup on a bayonet. The result is a herbal pillow.
On June 1, I made beds and planted carrots as usual, in rovts, sprinkled with earth. Next is the usual care. The appearance of my "girl sitting in a dungeon" was magnificent, the greenery was simply raging, and the harvest was not bad in the fall.
Hence the conclusion: my method of planting is not laborious and effective. The phacelia herb cushion loosens the soil and helps the root crops germinate, and also feeds it with nitrogen during growth. The land on my site is sandy. The experiment was carried out on varieties: Sentyabrina, Flakke and Kuroda Shantane. All good fellows, they justified themselves.
Carrots - garden and vegetable garden
The fact is that in the initial stage, the root hair is too small to get water at a depth. If it doesn't rain in the early stages and you don't water the carrots, they will produce small, dry, yellowish roots. Just at the initial stage, it should be watered until it sets the root crop (usually with 4-5 leaves). Carrots have a taproot, it is already directed downward, so it will grow deep into the soil. But when the roots are the size of a finger, the carrots should be thinned a second time and watering should be stopped. Now it has a powerful root stem that can go to great depths (up to 2-3 m), and there is always enough moisture. From this point on, you do not need to water the carrots.
Why do carrot freaks grow up?
Crooked roots most often appear due to late thinning (the first should be done when the first true leaf appears) and because of thickened plantings.
A root crop with constrictions is obtained in soil of different densities. The root crop branches, if in the river. Read more "
Why do carrots curl?
Because at the base of young leaves, an umbelliferae has settled and sucks juices from the leaves. It flies in the earliest spring from coniferous crops on which it hibernates. The easiest way is to cover carrot crops with lutrasil. Sometimes it is recommended to water them with a solution of kerosene or sprinkle with mothballs. This should not be done: firstly, root crops will have these odors, and secondly, kerosene and naphthalene are strong carcinogens, and they are. Read more "
- When harvesting, do not dig up all the carrots, leave some of the root crops in the garden. After freezing, carefully cut off the tops. Cover the bed with fallen leaves or straw with a layer of 15–20 cm, and on top with a film. Add snow in harsh winters. And then, in early spring, you can dig up fresh tasty root vegetables.
- In the middle and central lane, the following sowing dates for carrots are observed: early varieties - from April 20 to 25, mid-season - from April 25 to May 5.
- Carrots are sown before winter, in November - December, on frozen soil, with dry seeds, so that they cannot germinate until spring, otherwise the seedlings will freeze. Winter-sown carrots give an earlier harvest. It is used mainly in the summer, it is not suitable for storage.
- Watering. With a lack of moisture in the soil, root crops grow coarse and woody, and with an excess, their tops and core grow strongly, while the growth of root crops stops.
- Carrots prefer even watering. With a high watering rate on dry soil, cracking of root crops can be noticed. Therefore, in order to get a high yield of even, beautiful root crops, carrots are watered, starting from germination, moderately and regularly.
- Carrots are well preserved if they are lowered into a thick (creamy) clay “chatterbox” before storing them. After drying, the roots are placed in boxes in rows, with or without sand sprinkling. If carrots are harvested for storage without sprinkling or coating with clay, they should be dusted with finely crushed chalk. This reduces the likelihood of root decay during storage.
- Carrots are well preserved in plastic bags with a layer of sawdust on top (8-10 cm). Before storage, the root vegetables are dipped in a "chatterbox" of chopped garlic (1 cup of mushy garlic per 1 liter of water), dried a little and stored.
- It is useful to sprinkle root crops with dry onion husks.
- Carrots have a "docile nature": they get along well with all vegetable crops. But she also has special "sympathies": onions, tomatoes, sage, lettuce, marjoram, peas.
- The best predecessors of carrots are onions and onions. After them, carrots give a significant increase in yield, moreover, they acquire immunity to diseases of white and gray rot.
This text is an introductory fragment.
How often should carrots be watered
It is necessary to water the carrot beds in about a week - ten days. Carrots are rarely watered, but evenly and abundantly. It is important to maintain uniform soil moisture at a depth of about 10-20 cm. If excess moisture is allowed in this layer, root crop branching may begin, and the central root will die off.
It is useful after each watering at the same time to lightly loosen the soil - this is done so that continuous crusts do not form on the ground. When loosening, weeds that constantly appear on the soil surface are simultaneously destroyed.
